Overview
You will develop many competencies like: measurement, marking out and hand skills. Also, you will develop machining skills to include drilling, centre lathe turning and vertical milling. In addition to this due to demands in the area for multi-skilled engineers, you will also study assembly and testing and wiring and testing of electronic circuits.
As part of the program of study you will also have the opportunity go out on a work placement making you more employable, work with real employers on real industrial projects and work with experienced engineering tutors in a vocational setting.
Anyone who is taken on with less than a GCSE grade C in English Language, or maths will also be asked to improve this through further GCSE study, or equivalent Functional Skills.
You will also be asked to provide your own P.P.E for workshop tasks that include boots and overalls. Advice what will suit best will be given on interview/taster courses.

Entry Requirements
A minimum of 4 GCSE grade D to include English and Science subjects and a grade C in Maths. -
Assessment Types
Theory subjects are internally assessed through written assignments and end tests.
Practical work is assessed by the manufacture of test pieces followed by the completion of a task booklet which includes a self-inspection and a formal staff assessment detailing the accuracy and surface finished of the component.

- Producing components using hand fitting techniques
- Preparing and using lathes for turning operations
- Preparing and using milling machines
- Wiring and Testing of Electronic Circuits
- Assembly and Testing of Electronic Circuits

As well as the skills mentioned above you will be studying qualifications following the majority of the same path as a Modern Apprentice. -
Careers/Progression
Ideally, in year 2 you would have found employment and return as an apprentice. If not progression currently onto Level 3 and 90 credit diploma is also an option.
NEW – Keighley College – Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.
Keighley College and Oakbank School, funded by Bradford Council. Are developing an Industrial Centre of Excellence (ICE) for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering. The ICE this will include a fully fitted workshop which will include Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC)machines and industry standards equipment to prepare young people to progress into the growing engineering and manufacturing economy.
Full-time students will be able to study for the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations.
