General Welder (Arc Processes)

Apprenticeship, Level 2
Welders create high-quality welds using manual and mechanised arc welding, working with at least two process-material combinations—one of which must involve manual welding.
  • Overview

Welders join metals in industries like aerospace, construction, and marine engineering, contributing to the UK economy through the creation and repair of engineered assets. They work in various settings, including construction sites, factories, and fabrication shops, using manual and mechanised arc welding processes across at least two material and process combinations. Welders operate with minimal supervision, ensure work meets quality, health, safety, and environmental standards, and collaborate with teams including fabricators and inspectors. Their role includes producing high-quality welds in multiple positions and joints, using specialised equipment, and may involve shift work, working at height, or near water.
