The BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Manufacturing Engineering is a two year part-time course. It is aimed at students who have already gained a Level 3 qualification in Manufacturing Engineering and wish to progress to a higher level. It also forms the technical element of a Higher Level Apprenticeship Standard.

The course contains significant project-based learning, including laboratory investigations, design work, projects, case studies and tutorials.

Core units for the HNC include:

  • Engineering Science
  • Managing professional engineering projects
  • Engineering Maths
  • Production engineering for manufacture
  • Engineering Design
  • Quality and process improvement

Optional units will run based on popular demand. These include:

  • Machining and processing of engineering materials
  • Mechanical workshop practice
  • Materials, Properties and Testing
  • Research Project

Including both time in taught sessions in college and self-directed study at home or work, you should expect to spend approximately 19 hours a week studying for this course.

The HNC/HND in Manufacturing Engineering will develop core competencies for the practicing engineer alongside softer skills such as business techniques and time management. The range of skills acquired will provide a pathway into diverse career opportunities within the engineering sector.

HNC/D’s in Engineering are assessed using a combination of internal assessment (set and marked by Keighley College), and internally assessed Pearson-set assignments (which are set by Pearson and marked by centres). In particular, the assessments include:

  • One core unit for the HNC will be assessed by a mandatory Pearson-set assignment.
  • Two core units for the HND will be assessed by a mandatory Pearson-set assignment.
  • All other units are assessed by centre-devised assignments.

At Keighley College, with a combination of workshop style, hands-on and taught classroom sessions using industry standard equipment, lab & mechanical workshop facilities.

(You will be required to provide your own PPE for workshop tasks, including boots, overalls and safety glasses.)

A* to C grade in GCSE Maths and relevant A-levels or relevant BTEC Level 3/National Certificate at MM or above. Industrial experience will also be considered. English: Level B2 (CEFR), PTE 51, IELTS 5.5 or equivalent.

These qualifications prepare you for employment in the manufacturing industry (such as production engineer, manufacturing engineer or manufacturing planner) or assist you with progression within employment or further study.

In particular the HNC/D qualification is recognised by some higher education providers as meeting admission requirements to the later stages of engineering degree programmes and forms the academic element of a higher level apprenticeship program.

Due to the higher level of qualification, your application for this course will be processed by the University Centre at Leeds City College, but the course itself will run from Keighley College.

This course is also offered at the Printworks Campus of Leeds City College and information in regards to the course offered at the Printworks Campus can be found here.
