This qualiﬁcation is designed to build the knowledge and skills needed when working with children and young people from birth to 19 years. It covers a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas and is spilt into two pathways:
– Social Care
– Learning and Development Support Services
It is aimed at those who wish to work, or are working at an unsupervised level in the Children and Young People’s Workforce in England.
During the course, you will study a range of units that will develop and extend your knowledge. Some of the topics you will cover are:
- Understand child and young person development
- Principles for implementing duty of care in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
- Care for the physical and nutritional needs of babies and young children
- Support disabled children and young people and those with specific requirements
- Support positive practice with children and young people with speech, language and communication needs
- Work with parents to meet their children’s needs
Throughout the course, you will be encouraged to reflect upon your professional experience and engage in evaluative and analytical thinking, to produce a reflective journal to support your practical assessments. The competences that you acquire will enable you to assume greater confidence and responsibility within your workplace. You will be able to assess children and analyse their development stages and achievements through observations in the placement.
Your tutor/assessor using a range of methods will assess it. This will include direct observation in the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or a task. You will need to be working, volunteering for 16hours minimum in a practical placement, as you need to show competence in both knowledge and skills. For those learners who have no previous experience of working with children and young people, it is recommended that 400 hours be spent in a Real Work Environment.
This course has minimum entry requirements of four GCSEs at grade C including English and Maths, L2 Children’s care learning and development or the L2 Certificate in childcare EYE.
For those students who wish to start the course with no prior qualifications then this will be on interview.
Students will also be required to complete the Disclosure and Barring Service process. (DBS) prior to commencement on placement.
Progression to the BA (Hons) Children and Young People’s Care and Education (Top Up) offered by Leeds City College (subject to validation 2017).
The course will delivered at Keighley campus.
