This is the progression course for people who have completed the Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installation or for applicants with a previous qualification at the same level in a suitably related area and wishes to either seek work as an electrician or work in the wider electrical engineering or installation field.

This course is specifically for students aged 19 and over, and is delivered on a part-time basis of two evenings per week over two years.

The qualification consists of seven units. The units of study are:

201 Health and Safety in Building Services Engineering

301 Understand the fundamental principle and requirements of environmental technology systems

302 Principles of Electrical Science

303 Electrical Installations: fault diagnosis and rectification

304 Electrical Installations: inspection, testing and commissioning

305 Electrical Systems Design

308 Career awareness in building services engineering

You will learn about the development of and implementation of maintenance and fault diagnosis procedures on a range of electrical systems.

You will also learn about the principles of operation of the systems mentioned in a practically and theoretical manner to improve your experience.

There are practical tasks within the course that develop previous hand and tool skills, providing opportunities to develop skills in the use and understanding of electrical and electronic test and measurements instruments.

Assessment of achievement is via a mixture of on-line choice assessments, assessment of practical work produced to specific requirements and the individually produced written assignments.

Classroom and workshop

Suitable applicants will hold, or may have the equivalent of, the Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installation.

Consideration may be given to applicants that have other qualifications at Level 2 in a similar area.

All applicants will be subject to an interview and assessment of suitability to ensure they meet the entry requirements of the course and the course will meet their personal training.

This course offers the opportunity to progress to higher qualifications such as the HNC in Building Services or a suitable BTEC programme. In addition, successful candidates may apply for the BS7671 (2015) 17th Edition Wiring Regulations course.

If you are aged 19 or over and considering enrolling on a further education course at Level 3 or above, you may be entitled to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with course fees.
