This course provides a general introduction to working with children aged 0-7 years. If you want to work with babies and young children, this is a great starting point to start your career!

This qualification encourages an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed to care for young children. It covers children’s growth, learning and development. There are also units to help with self-development.

Content is varied with themes including safeguarding, health and safety, child development, legislation, creative crafts, healthy eating, health promotion, enabling environments, communication and care routines.

All students will be required to develop skills in Personal & Social Development and Employability alongside their vocational qualification. For those who have not yet achieved a Grade 4 (C) in English and Maths, they will be required to undertake classes for this as well.

You will develop the necessary skills to effectively care for children both in a home and an early year’s environment, providing an excellent start to a successful career within early years care.

You will be assessed through an array of assessment methods: written work, posters/leaflets, peer assessment, observations and professional discussion.

Classrooms, outdoor settings and other vocational settings.

Students wishing to enrol to a Level 1 learning programme will come with a range of qualifications which could include GCSE’s, units of qualifications already taken, or have few or no formal qualifications.

Each student will be invited to an interview where a personalised learning programme can be discussed and agreed. All candidates must be committed to working in the Health, Social Care or Childcare sector, be caring, creative and energetic, have a sense of humour and a lively and outgoing personality.

To work with children (under 18) or vulnerable adults, students will need to complete an enhanced disclosure check with the Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS). The college will support you in organising this but unless you are in receipt of benefit, you will have to pay. The estimated cost of the enhanced DBS check is £51.50. Full details regarding payment and documentation will be provided prior to enrolment.

You will receive advice on careers and further study during the course. After successful completion of this course you can choose to seek employment, apply for an apprenticeship of traineeship in Health and Social Care/ Childcare/ Clinical Support work. You can also apply for a Level 2 course in play work, early years, health and social care, counselling or other Level 2 courses.
