This qualification is an introduction to the primary aspects of working with children and young people between the ages of 0 to 16 in play environments, providing an understanding of the importance of play and play work in children and young people’s lives.

The Level 2 course prepares you to work in a range of settings with children and young people from birth to 16 years.
You will also have opportunities to work in the industry and develop your communication skills to prepare you for employment or progression to a level 3 course.
The Diploma covers the knowledge and skills needed when working under supervision and requires the learner to demonstrate the full application of these in the workplace, and is aimed at all those who wish to work in a supervised role in a wide range of playwork environments.
You will study a wide range of subjects in our practical nursery classroom; you may study some of the following units:
- Roles and responsibilities of the early years practitioner
- Supporting children and young people’s play
- Working within a play environment with children and young people
- Playwork principles
- Safeguarding and welfare of children and young people in the play environment
- Promote play in an early years setting
You can build the knowledge and skills needed to work with children and young people from birth up to 16 years. On completion, learners will be able to work, under guidance, in a wide range of job roles within the childcare sector. You will also develop your English, Maths and interpersonal skills throughout the duration of the course.
All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods: direct observation within vocational settings, written assignments, case studies, videos and practical activities.
There are no externally assessed exams or assessments.
The course will be delivered at Keighley College campus in classrooms, a practical nursery classroom and external placements.
Most applicants will need a minimum of 4 GCSE’s at Grade 3 including Maths and/or English at grade 4 or above. A satisfactory completion of a Level 1 program with a formal reference will also be considered.
All candidates must be committed to working with young children and their families, be creative, energetic, have a passion for working with children.
To work with children (under 18) or vulnerable adults, students may need to complete an enhanced check with the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly CRB) The college will arrange this for you but if your course is not fully funded (i.e. you are aged 16-18 or on certain benefits) then you will have to pay. The estimated cost of the DBS check is £54. Full details regarding payment documents will be provided prior to enrolment.
Due to Statutory Guidelines. If you will be undertaking placements involving caring for children aged under 8, you will need to complete a Disqualifications Requirements questionnaire for yourself and other members of your household. This will be discussed further with you at your interview.
To work with children (under 18) or vulnerable adults, students will need to complete an enhanced check with the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly CRB). The college will arrange this for you, if you are entitled to the college bursary, but you are not entitled you will have to pay the cost of £51.50 (free subject to change)

On completion, learners can progress onto various job roles such as assistants in a Children’s/Youth Centre or progress onto the Level 3 Certificate/Diploma in Early Years Education.
