This programme is ideal for school leavers who want to become skilled crafts people.

The course develops your knowledge and skills in college rather than in a working environment. You will learn by a series of practical exercises in well-equipped workshops, backed up by relevant classroom theory.


During this course, you will study both Bricklaying units and Carpentry & Joinery units. You will then choose which discipline you would like to pursue full time in Year 2.

By gaining skills in both brickwork and carpentry and joinery, you will have a great advantage when applying for jobs.

Units you will undertake are:

  • Health and Safety in construction
  • Constructing Brick Corners
  • Tee Halving Joints
  • Mortise and Tenon Joints

You may also be required to attend GCSE English and Maths.

Providing an introductory insight into the construction industry. Students will develop and demonstrate a working understanding of basic construction practices in both brick and carpentry/joinery.

You will also undertake qualifications in personal and social development, and functional skills if required.

Your progress is assessed throughout the year. You will develop a variety of construction skills which will be tested by practical demonstration of your competence throughout the course.

You will also undertake written assessments and sit a classroom exam.

Classrooms and college workshops

There are no formal entry requirements but applicants must have a commitment to learning. You will be interviewed for your suitability.

If you are under 19 and you do not already have English & Maths GCSE grades 9-4 or equivalent you will be required to undertake GCSE or Functional Skills alongside your main qualification.

You can choose which discipline you would prefer to continue, either Brickwork or Joinery, and undertake a Level 2 Diploma in the area of your choice here at Keighley College. You also have the option to progress onto a bricklaying or joinery apprenticeship.
