Mechanical Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3)

The Engineering Manufacture framework is designed to provide the skills, knowledge and competence requirements to operate at operator, semi-skilled, craft or technician level as appropriate within the following engineering sub-sectors: Automotive, Aerospace, Electronics, Mechanical, Marine, Electrical, Metal goods and other transport equipment.

Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma in Engineering Maintenance(QCF)

As part of this qualification the learner is required to complete 3 mandatory units plus 3 technically specific Performing Engineering Operations level 2 units.

Mandatory units

  • Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
  • Using and interpreting engineering data and documentation
  • Working efficiently and effectively in engineering

Optional Units

  • Producing components using hand fitting techniques*
  • Preparing and using lathes for turning operations*
  • Preparing and using milling machines*
  • The cost to add 2 extra units is £956.25
  • Preparing and using CNC turning machines
  • Preparing and using CNC milling machines
  • Wiring and testing electrical equipment and circuits
  • Assembling and testing electronic circuits

*any of these can be replaced with the electrical units if preferred

2nd Year

  • Properties and Applications of engineering materials
  • Computer Aided Drafting for Technicians
  • Applications of mechanical systems in engineering
  • Electro, Pneumatic and Hydraulic systems and devices
  • Mechanical measurement and inspection techniques
  • Electrical and electronic principles

Functional Skills qualifications:

– Level 2 Functional Skill in English
– Level 2 Functional Skill in Maths
– Level 2 Functional Skill in ICT

+ Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

Skilled machinist, CNC machinist, Tool maker, Mechanical maintenance fitter, Workshop technician, Quality engineer, Production engineer, Design engineer.

Entry onto this qualification is subject to successful completion of initial assessments. GCSEs grades A*-C in English, Maths and ICT are essential.

The course is delivered on a day release basis at college.
