Supporting Teaching and Learning Foundation Degree
This course is subject to validation by Leeds City College.
This programme is aimed at students who are either currently employed in supporting the teaching and learning of children and young people (4-25yrs) or wishing to develop their role in this area. The course has been written with an integrated work based focus throughout. Full time students will attend college for two days per week and part time students will attend college for one afternoon and evening per week at the Technology Campus.
This course will equip students with a combination of technical skills, academic knowledge, and transferable skills that employers are increasingly demanding. We encourage autonomy and independent thinking using a mixture of lectures, seminars, scenario/case study, presentations, group work and work practice.
An emphasis on the balance between academic studies and work placement projects will enable students to demonstrate their transferable skills between work and college.
Students need to have had experience working with children as a volunteer, in employment or work placement and will need to be able to communicate effectively with a range of people in a variety of ways.

Throughout the course, you will be encouraged to reflect upon your professional experience and engage in evaluative and analytical thinking. In addition, you will develop your research and academic writing skills. These qualities and transferable skills are necessary for employment and progression to other qualifications. The new competences that you acquire will enable you to assume greater confidence and responsibility within your workplace.
The assessments utilised on the programme have been designed with the changing role of supporting teaching and learning in education at the forefront. Observations and planning for children and young people’s learning are skills that are required for teaching assistants to acquire, as well as effective communication skills with a range of people.
Case studies enable students to look holistically at a case and evaluate interventions, initiatives and strategies to raise the achievement of children and young people. They then can plan and make suggestions for future sessions and individual learning plans for children and young people.
Presentations develop students’ confidence in speaking to others. These also enable students to share research and findings with each other and develop this practice within their workplace.
Students will take part in discussions, seminars, peer reviews and evaluations on an on-going basis. They are encouraged to share good practice from their work placement opportunities with their peers in group work, discussions and seminar groups. There are opportunities to share these with their mentors and colleagues at work and reflect upon their learning, thus building essential reflective and reflexive practitioner skills. Over the course of the study programme these skills will enable students to develop their levels of responsibility and autonomy working within the required levels of supervision for the job role involved.
This course is delivered at the Technology Campus. The HE Health and Caring Services have a designated HE suite on the first floor.
This course has minimum entry requirements of 1 x E in a relevant A level or a pass in a relevant Level 3 qualification (in relevant subject area) including GCSE English at C. However, candidates receiving this minimum offer would need to demonstrate experience in and commitment to their chosen Foundation Degree subject .Part time students must be employed in a relevant role in the sector.
A typical offer is likely to be 2 x D at A level, or a Merit profile in a relevant BTEC National Diploma/Certificate or Children and Young People’s Workforce at Level 3) or Pass*/ Pass ++ at Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning (STL) together with a number of GCSE grades at C or above including English.
International qualifications will be assessed against these criteria. Speakers of other languages will need to possess an IELTS band score of 6.0 (with no-less than 5.5 in any one element) or a recognised English Level 2 qualification. All students will be interviewed prior to selection on the course and have opportunity to discuss course requirements. APL may be possible dependant on qualifications and experience. Students will also be required to complete the Disclosure and Barring Service process (DBS)
As part of this course, you will be required to have an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check and will be expected to pay any fees associated with this. Fees are estimated to be around £60.

Many of our graduates used this qualification to gain promotion in teaching assistant roles or to enhance their career. Foundation Degree in Supporting Teaching and Learning gives students an opportunity to progress to other qualifications. Some graduates may choose to top up to a full degree at Leeds City College, such as the BA (Hons) Children and Young People’s Care and Education (subject to validation). Dependant on other relevant qualifications students may wish to undertake a PGCE or similar after their full BA (Hons) degree.
