This course is aimed at students who want to work in the Adventurous and Outdoor Activity sector and who have a love of the outdoors and challenging themselves and others.

The course will include Caving, Climbing, Orienteering and Navigation Skills, and Expedition Skills as well as exploring factors that affect participation and leadership in the outdoors. You will be taught by expert practitioners with years of instructing work experience and specialist activity experience in the industry. We also offer opportunities for work experience in Finland and Slovenia as well as an action-packed timetable of outdoor activities.
The course will include:
Outdoor and adventurous activities: In this unit learners will consider the range of outdoor provision available to participate in and consider the health and safety requirements, environmental impact and risks associated with particular activities.
Expedition planning: Learners will plan an expedition demonstrating their expedition skills, by using appropriate equipment, working as a team and assist qualified leaders/instructors in the leading of others during the expedition.
Promote outdoor activities: This unit gives learners the opportunity to take part in the promotion of an outdoor activity. This will include understanding the structure of the outdoor industry, considering participation rates in activities, potential; barriers and the organisations responsible for developing outdoor activities. Learners will look at ways to promote outdoor activities and how different media is used.
This course allows you to explore and develop your leadership skills and by participating in a number of activities, you will gain confidence and self-reliance. By working with experienced and qualified instructors you will learn how to risk assess, manage groups and individuals, industry legislation, access and conservation and a good solid foundation for anyone wishing to work in this industry as a leader.
You will be assesses through a number of methods including written reports, presentations, examination, video evidence, interviews, blog and diary entries, and practical demonstrations.
We use Google Classroom and apps to provide access to all the learning resources and to allow you to hand in assessment work easily. Wherever practicable, you will be assess through practical means.
This course is delivered at Keighley College in the classroom, gym and in the outdoor venues which we are exceptionally well placed to access, such as the hills and moors surrounding Keighley and beyond. We are also lucky to be less than 30 minutes away from some of the best caving and climbing in the UK, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
A minimum of 4 GCSE’s at grade 3 including English and/or ideally Maths or equivalent (e.g. Level 1 Foundation Skills), or satisfactory completion of a Foundation learning programme at Level 1 with a minimum of 37 credits.
All applicants must have a genuine interest in working in the fitness industry, be prepared to participate in physical activities work in a team, overcome personal challenges and have an enthusiastic approach to learning.
